It brings people together. You can talk to people from all over the world, in an instant, anywhere, anytime. Especially Twitter has brought people as a whole together, I think. Celebrities tweet about their every-day life. You can experience them from a whole new perspective - they seem more down to earth that way. Not as removed from us "normal" people.

Not only do so-called "celebrities" get closer to us that way - the ones that are REALLY down to earth get even closer, by responding to their fans. Answering their questions, responding about criticisms, jokes, or anything else really. I'd like to present one example why I love Twitter, and the general connectivity the "Web 2.0" offers: Ladies and Gentlemen, Jake Adelstein. He's (quoting himself) the "author of Tokyo Vice, investigative journalist, Polaris Project Japan board member [and] semi-paladin". I strongly advice you to visit his blog. Also I'd like to tell a short story about how I learned about him and his book.

It first began last summer (I think), when I read this article about the game Yakuza 3 being reviewed by real Yakuza. Jake sat down with some of his Yakuza friends and convinced them to play it. In the article, his excellent book was also mentioned. So I got it for Christmas and read it cover to cover in a few days - it's that amazing. If you're even slightly interested in either Japan, the Yakuza, criminals or detective and police work, you should get it. It's available in several languages, so there's no excuse really.

Not shortly after reading the book, I followed Jake's Twitter account. He's tweeting regularly about his work, philosophy, or just mundane things going on in his life. Like going to McDonald's at 3AM or wearing Hello Kitty pajamas. He's also regularly responding to Tweets by other users. And that's what I find so miraculous. Nowhere else besides on Twitter can you "meet" a favorite author of yours and casually chat with him, encourage him on writing his newest book or.. anything really.

skuldomg: @jakeadelstein Writing your new one at the moment?

jakeadelstein: @skuldomg Yes. It was just too uncomfortable for me reading stories on a big computer screen, compared to good old books. You have to sit in your computer chair, click through the pages, it just doesn't feel right. I've only ever read one eBook on a computer, and that was The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, on my laptop. In bed, before going to sleep. The book is great, entertaining enough to make up for the absent comfort. But after that, I just haven't found any book interesting enough to read on a computer but not interesting enough to not warrant buying a real copy.

Today, out of the blue, the idea sprang into my mind that I look up eBook reader apps for my newly acquired HTC Wildfire. It doesn't have a big screen, so I wasn't really expecting much, but to my surprise, after downloading the Aldiko eBook reader, I'm really hooked. You can import your own PDFs and ePub format files. I've only tried it out for one train ride now, so I can't really say much but as a first look, it's awesome. I imported some issues of the Hacker Monthly Magazine, which I subscribed to for free approx. 1 year ago for a student programme.

I'm absolutely loving it. Even on my small screen, you can read without any discomfort, scrolling through the pages is fast, and I have nothing bad to say about it. There's also a store, of course, but I'm still a bit reserved about buying eBooks. In my experience, they're almost as expensive as their real live counterparts, which is unjustified in my opinion. If I have the choice of buying a new book for 20€ as a hard copy or as an eBook, my choice will always be the real copy. Here comes the big BUT: A lot of classics are available for free from the store! And, as we all know, classics are the best. I've downloaded The Divine Comedy, since I wanted to read it for years now. There's a lot of other great stuff too, like Dracula, Frankenstein, War & Peace, and so on. Also there's a section for independent authors and a lot of the books on there are free too. I'm looking forward to dig around them!

So, I've arrived in the world of eBooks. I'm thrilled to see what's awaiting me there.Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01461582674301060625noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1575134189293183629.post-52806734764961351952011-05-11T16:45:00.001+02:002011-05-16T00:20:56.038+02:00I'm still aliveI haven't blogged in about two months. I haven't REALLY blogged in about three months (I consider this my last real blogpost). It's been a real busy time since then. I had to study a lot for the exams I took in February, March and the first week of April. It did pay off that I studied so hard, since I passed all of them, except one. There was much at stake, so that was the main motivator I guess. If I hadn't passed all of them (except one), I wouldn't have been able to start my Bachelor's Thesis, which in turn had meant I wouldn't finish my Degree in summer. I would have had to stay at home and take another semester, which would have taken until next winter/spring.

It was hard work, especially the Engineering exam(s). I studied HARD for the written part of the exams but I failed it at first. That was devastating news for me. I felt really really bad, felt that my future was at stake, kind of. Luckily, there was the possibility of taking an oral examination afterwards, which could still secure me a "pass" for it. I knew that the oral examination wouldn't be so bad, because I had taken one with the same professor before and it was really easy and friendly. But of course, timing is a bitch. I don't know whether it was the stress, bad timing/luck/karma, but I got really really sick the Sunday or Monday (I don't remember which) before the exam, which should be held on a Thursday.

I still don't know exactly what caused it but the main suspect is a viral infection my father brought home from Turkey. My parents had been on vacation there and had returned on the Saturday before the exam. On (let's just say) Sunday evening, I started to feel REALLY bad out of the blue. And by out of the blue I mean completely out of the blue. I had literally eaten a huge bowl of Ramen for dinner. Then, when I was driving to our local movie-rental shop, my stomach started to feel weird. When I returned home, it only got worse. I said to my girlfriend that I wasn't feeling well and would go to the bathroom. On the way there, I felt it. I could barely make it there, when everything just gushed out. And not out of the rear end.

Now, normally I'm not the type of person to get sick easily. I haven't been really sick in about two years, the last sickness I got was a small cold that lasted a few days. I can't even remember when the last time was that I was sick before that. But now, it really got me. No substance, be it solid or liquid, remained in my body for the whole night. Naturally, I tried to drink so that I wouldn't get dehydrated but everytime I drank something, I had to rush to the bathroom just a couple of minutes later. That night was really hell. Luckily I got some magic Chinese Medicine from my girlfriend. The next day, when I could finally drink something again, I took it and I immediately started to feel better. I still couldn't really eat though. The next night, I could gradually drink more and more and slept better (I still overdid it one time..).

Naturally, I couldn't really study for the exam during that time, which only left me roughly one and a half day for it. I managed to pass it really well though, the professor even stopped me before my time was over and said "You already said enough to pass". So yeah, the most difficult courses of my whole time at University were finally behind me. I'm glad that I never have to do anything with Engineering again.

Soon afterwards, I could start my search for my Bachelor's Thesis. I knew beforehand that I probably wanted to write it for our Institute of Software Engineering, since that's the institute I'm most interested in and they offer a lot of great courses at our University. Another choice might have been the Institute for Programming Languages and Translators but unfortunately they got closed down after their head professor went into retirement, Prof. Dr. Rainer Parchmann - which I consider one of the best professors our University had. I only visited two courses of his, the compulsory Scheme course, which in hindsight really shaped my thinking about programming in general, and his course Programming Languages and Translators. It's so sad the institute got closed down, they offered a course on Compiler Construction which I wanted to visit but now they don't offer it anymore.

So that left me with Software Engineering. My task translates to something like "Feedback enrichment via mobile phone provided location based data and Web-2.0 services". It's basically an expansion of a software that got written during a software project. You can offer feedback to so-called smart objects, like food in the cafetaria or the quality of a certain room, etc. My task is to enrich that feedback via web-services that tell the system more about the context of the user, like what weather it currently is. Unfortunately, the task is very conceptional and not much programming, although I will implement a little at the end.

About one or two days after all the papers got signed and I could officially start, I saw an offer by a different institute about a traffic simulation and stuff like shortest-path-algorithm analysis. That sounded wayyy more interesting, especially since it sounded like 80% programming. But well, you get what you get and now I'm working on my Thesis, more or less. I haven't done as much as I'd like to but yeah. Whatever. Things will turn out good eventually, I'm sure.

One more thing I haven't mentioned here yet, but which I'm pretty proud of: I took the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) in Decembre aaand I passed! I got the results back in early March or something I think. I did study a lot for it, especially in the last few weeks before the test (it was held on Decembre 5th) but I still had a few doubts about it. There were a couple of Kanji I couldn't read but it seems I managed to get most of it right through context and guessing. What really surprised me, I was really really bad at the listening section, although that was the easiest section of them all. The students (and the professor!) literally LAUGHED at the questions and possible answers. It was something like これは何ですか? ("What is this?", accompanied by a picture of a dog). A) 犬 (dog) B) 猫 (cat) C) 子ども (child) D) 電車 (train). Ridiculously easy. But I still had very few points there, I wonder why.

Proud of it!

Anyway, I passed it at level N4 (the second lowest level), so I still have a long long way to go. I don't think I'd be able to hold a conversation at a normal level yet, but when I watch and listen to people talk, I think I get what they're saying most of the time. I'm still learning everyday, my motivation these days is this really cool blog, where a calligraphist posts one Kanji a day. So you can take your time and learn them as they are posted. The explanations are really good, too!

So there you have it. A massive post, an up-to-date look into my life at the moment. I hope I can post more regularly.Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01461582674301060625noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1575134189293183629.post-30701644505380851642011-03-06T23:44:00.001+01:002011-03-06T23:45:23.461+01:00BloggingI really want to write long and elaborated blog posts.

But it's just like with everythin else right now - too much to do, not enough time. It all started with a chess computer beating the human chess master. That was round 1 for the robots.
Round 2 was a Go Robot, which also beat his human opponent, as far as I know (I couldn't really find a credible source, except for a mention in a Kotaku article).

But now, it's getting even more frightening. I've already read about it a while ago: IBM was building a super-computer with the beautiful name "Watson", dedicated to beating us puny humans at Jeopardy. And on Monday, ironically on Valentine's Day, the battle started. A special episode of Jeopardy aired, in which Watson was paired against two human all-time champions. And he won (although he answered wrong on the final question).

The frightening thing about Watson is that he is capable of understanding human speech. While the question is being read, he processes it and finds an answer in approximately three seconds (although he is able to answer faster than that). Apparently though, he has a built in random delay before he activates the buzzer to answer. And that, so reports say, is the key to beating him. Humans just need to buzzer faster and THEN think of an answer, although that is kind of risky, since there's a penalty for buzzering too fast.

Tonight there will be a rematch, possibly the last chance to save our human dignity. I'm just asking myself, what's next? The apocalypse is near, my friends, and I have a strong feeling that it won't be natural desasters or the Coming of Christ or Aliens. Someday, it will be the robots that will destroy us all.

Oh, also there's (I quote) "terrifying video footage" of the latest Humans vs. Robots battle. And it truly IS terrifying. Watch at your own risk.

UPDATE: My bad, the battle is already over and, once again, humanity has lost.

Wikipedia quote:

In a two-game, combined-point match aired in three Jeopardy! episodes running from February 14–16, Watson bested Brad Rutter, the biggest all-time money winner on Jeopardy!, and Ken Jennings, the record holder for the longest championship streak. Watson received first prize of $1 million, while Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter received $300,000 and $200,000, respectively.Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01461582674301060625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1575134189293183629.post-84941113168975883452011-02-07T18:28:00.004+01:002011-02-07T18:43:52.066+01:00New Books
A couple of days ago, my girlfriend told me that our local antiquity/book store had some books by Stephen King for sale. Everything they sell is always so cheap (we suspect that the owner is in fact a very rich guy who only owns that store because he loves old stuff so much), so today I went for a walk there. The weather was perfect and I needed some fresh air after nearly a week of being sick. I bought the four books pictured. Actually I wanted to buy two more but they were so heavy and big that I discarded one I already own (although in an inferior paperback edition) and one that didn't sound so interesting (something about sex games).

The Hemingway book I accidentally stumbled upon. I was asking myself beforehand whether they sold any English books, and as soon as I looked around, that one sprung into my eye. So I just took it with me on a whim, thinking I really need to read more classic authors. All in all, the four books cost me 10€, I don't know exactly which one cost how much but I guess the hardcover books are 3€ each and the Hemingway one 1€.

Reading is sexy!Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01461582674301060625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1575134189293183629.post-66839934390044223502011-01-26T00:09:00.006+01:002011-01-26T00:14:41.781+01:00You shall be my roots
You shall be my roots and
I will be your shade,
though the sun burns my leaves.

You shall quench my thirst and
I will feed you fruit,
though time takes my seed.

And when I'm lost and can tell nothing of this earth
you will give me hope.

And my voice you will always hear.
And my hand you will always have.
For I will shelter you.
And I will comfort you.
And even when we are nothing left,
even in death,
I will remember you.
Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01461582674301060625noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1575134189293183629.post-71005328075426247182011-01-19T08:52:00.002+01:002011-01-19T08:57:23.017+01:00Some people are straight assholesOkay, first off, I don't really like handshaking. It leads to misunderstandings if you're in a hurry and don't have the time to shake someone's hand (they might take it personally), it leads to unnessecary smalltalk and I straight don't understand why you should be obliged to shake hands if you only pass each other on a hallway or something.

But this is a different story. I was just approached by some guy at work who wanted me to fix something on his computer. Okay, that's my job. Thing is, I was just coming in, he was coming down the stairs, we said good morning and passed each other, when he turned around and said "Oh, that's right, there's something broken!". So, I turned around, asked him what's up and offered to shake hands, since we were in for a talk, obviously.

And this guy just plain stares at me, ignoring my stretched out hand, describing his problem. Now seriously, why would you do that? Danielewski. I've heard good things about it for years now and finally decided to put it on my Christmas wishlist. I'm not that far into it yet but it seems really great. Here's a small excerpt:

But then my nostrils flare with the scent of something bitter & foul, something inhuman, reeking with so much rot & years, telling me in the language of nausea that I'm not alone.
Something's behind me.
Of course, I deny it.
It's impossible to deny.
I wanna puke.

To get a better idea try this: focus on these words, and whatever you do don't let your eyes wander past the perimeter of this page. Now imagine just beyond your peripheral vision, maybe behind you, maybe to the side of you, maybe even in front of you, but right where you can't see it, something is quietly closing in on you, so quiet in fact you can only hear it as silence. Find those pockets without sound. That's where it is. Right at this moment. But don't look. Keep your eyes here. Now take a deep breath. Go ahead take an even deeper one. Only this time as you start to exhale try to imagine how fast it will happen, how hard it's gonna hit you, how many times it will stab your jugular with its teeth or are they nails?, don't worry, that particular detail doesn't matter, because before you have time to even process that you should be moving, you should be running, you should at the very least be flinging your arms--you sure as hell should be getting rid of this book--you won't have time to even scream.
Don't look.
I didn't.
Of course I looked.
I looked so fucking fast I should of ended up wearing one of those neck braces for whiplash.
Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01461582674301060625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1575134189293183629.post-41013746558798703432011-01-10T17:06:00.002+01:002011-01-10T17:28:23.952+01:00Sleepy DecembreI've been using a program called SleepChart for over a month now to record when and how much I slept. It's quite interesting, although it doesn't really serve a purpose.
The only downside of the program is that you can't export your statistics. Your save data is also stored in a binary format, so I can't easily write some code up to export it myself, so I'll just have to manually write it up. (It's probably not that interesting, but I just wanna have a small overview on how my sleeping habits are.)

1 Dec: 00:10 - 7:30 (7h 20min)
2 Dec: 00:50 - 6:30 (5h 40min)
3 Dec: 00:30 - 6:30 (6h)
4 Dec: 00:20 - 6:30 (6h 10min)
5 Dec: 00:20 - 5:30 (5h 10min)
6 Dec: 01:00 - 10:30 (9h 30min)
7 Dec: 00:45 - 7:00 (6h 15min)
8 Dec: 00:20 - 12:00 (11h 40min)
9 Dec: 00:30 - 6:30 (6h)
10 Dec: 00:30 - 6:30 (6h)
11 Dec: 01:45 - 11:00 (09h 15min)
12 Dec: 02:30 - 03:30 and 05:30 - 11:00 (totally 6h 30min)
13 Dec: 00:10 - 6:30 (6h 20min)
14 Dec: 23:45 - 6:30 (6h 45min)
15 Dec: 01:00 - 10:10 (9h 10min)
16 Dec: 01:00 - 11:00 (10h)
17 Dec: 01:00 - 5:30 (4h 30min)
18 Dec: 01:10 - 11:30 (10h 20min)
19 Dec: 02:30 - 12:30 (10h)
20 Dec: 01:45 - 10:30 (8h 45min)
21 Dec: 00:40 - 6:30 (5h 50min)
22 Dec: 01:30 - 09:30 (8h)
23 Dec: 01:15 - 09:00 (7h 45min)
24 Dec: 01:30 - 3:30 and 4:00 - 09:00 (7h)
25 Dec: 01:40 - 08:30 (6h 50min)
26 Dec: 03:00 - 11:00 (8h)
27 Dec: 3:30 - 11:00 (7h 30min)
28 Dec: 4:15 - 11:15 (7h)
29 Dec: 02:15 - 08:00 (5h 45min)
30 Dec: 02:45 - 10:00 (7h 15min)
31 Dec: 03:00 - 10:00 (7h)

Statistics:
Least sleeping time: 17 Dec, 4h 30min
Longest sleeping time: 8 Dec, 11h 40min
Total sleeping time / total hours in Decembre: 229.25 hours / 744 hours (= 30.8%)
Average sleeping time: 7.4 hours

Interesting. The year wasn't that eventful, with University strolling along as ever (except for a tightened schedule in August/Septembre, since I had to pass a lot of exams this time), and nothing much else happening. I was pretty insecure before taking the test, even though I studied heavily for it, especially the last few weeks in Novembre. After taking it, I felt a little relieved. I couldn't read all of the Kanji properly, but could guess most of the ones I didn't know and I had not much trouble with reading/listening comprehension. The results will be sent out in early February and I'm looking forward to them.

Biggest Purchase of 2010 except for a lot of food was my new TV. I've had my old huge TV long enough and now I've finally joined the world of HD-TV and BluRays! I've also just ordered my first one, The Omen III. It should arrive in two days and I'm already excited!

Music That Made Me Feel Like It's 1993 again in 2010. Uh well. None I guess, since I've been in a desperate need for new music since quite some time now. I've been listening to more Jazz/Fusion recently, but I still need more music. MORE.

Music That Stuck in My Head and Refused to Leave in 2010. Except for the annoying Vuvuzelas during the World Cup (which you can't count into music anyway) was, similar to Mr. Foreign Salaryman, SNSD. But not their Genie song, for me it was Gee. Warning, listening to it will make you feel disgusted, ashamed and ecstatic all at the same time.

Biggest Food Related Discovery in 2010 was probably the Chocolate Cake we tried to make in Octobre. Creating it was a pain and it looked disgusting, but after resting a day in the fridge, it didn't taste so bad at all. Too bad I didn't take any pictures.

Best Post of 2010. Yes, I just read through all of them. As you've probably noticed, the minority of my posts exceed the "Funny picture - funny sub-text" size (which I kind of intend to change, I'm just not that great a writer), and this one is no different. It's my favorite one nonetheless.

That's all for now. I've still got a post in the writing about the books I read in 2010. Maybe I'll post it in a couple of days, if I'm not too busy with University (which is starting again tomorrow).

By the way, I'm trying to change the language of my posts to English. No particular reason and I don't even know if I'll keep it that way.

Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01461582674301060625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1575134189293183629.post-22948487879323208222010-10-22T08:51:00.001+02:002010-10-22T08:53:15.602+02:00lol Daigo
Schönes Match, auch wenn Daigo verloren hat, und alle Amis in "USA!
