The Power of the Internet

The Internet is a wonderful thing. It brings people together. You can talk to people from all over the world, in an instant, anywhere, anytime. Especially Twitter has brought people as a whole together, I think. Celebrities tweet about their every-day life. You can experience them from a whole new perspective - they seem more down to earth that way. Not as removed from us "normal" people.

Not only do so-called "celebrities" get closer to us that way - the ones that are REALLY down to earth get even closer, by responding to their fans. Answering their questions, responding about criticisms, jokes, or anything else really. I'd like to present one example why I love Twitter, and the general connectivity the "Web 2.0" offers: Ladies and Gentlemen, Jake Adelstein. He's (quoting himself) the "author of Tokyo Vice, investigative journalist, Polaris Project Japan board member [and] semi-paladin". I strongly advice you to visit his blog. Also I'd like to tell a short story about how I learned about him and his book.

It first began last summer (I think), when I read this article about the game Yakuza 3 being reviewed by real Yakuza. Jake sat down with some of his Yakuza friends and convinced them to play it. In the article, his excellent book was also mentioned. So I got it for Christmas and read it cover to cover in a few days - it's that amazing. If you're even slightly interested in either Japan, the Yakuza, criminals or detective and police work, you should get it. It's available in several languages, so there's no excuse really.

Not shortly after reading the book, I followed Jake's Twitter account. He's tweeting regularly about his work, philosophy, or just mundane things going on in his life. Like going to McDonald's at 3AM or wearing Hello Kitty pajamas. He's also regularly responding to Tweets by other users. And that's what I find so miraculous. Nowhere else besides on Twitter can you "meet" a favorite author of yours and casually chat with him, encourage him on writing his newest book or.. anything really.

skuldomg: @jakeadelstein Writing your new one at the moment?

jakeadelstein: @skuldomg Yes. It requires a lot of research. Tokyo Vice took more than three years to write and it was my own life.

(...)

skuldomg: Wise words, as always. RT @jakeadelstein: There are no tiny dreams, just tiny bikinis.

jakeadelstein: @skuldomg I thought that was actually pretty funny. Thank you.

Sometimes, I love the Internet.

eBooks

Until now, I've avoided eBooks. It was just too uncomfortable for me reading stories on a big computer screen, compared to good old books. You have to sit in your computer chair, click through the pages, it just doesn't feel right. I've only ever read one eBook on a computer, and that was The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, on my laptop. In bed, before going to sleep. The book is great, entertaining enough to make up for the absent comfort. But after that, I just haven't found any book interesting enough to read on a computer but not interesting enough to not warrant buying a real copy.

Today, out of the blue, the idea sprang into my mind that I look up eBook reader apps for my newly acquired HTC Wildfire. It doesn't have a big screen, so I wasn't really expecting much, but to my surprise, after downloading the Aldiko eBook reader, I'm really hooked. You can import your own PDFs and ePub format files. I've only tried it out for one train ride now, so I can't really say much but as a first look, it's awesome. I imported some issues of the Hacker Monthly Magazine, which I subscribed to for free approx. 1 year ago for a student programme.

I'm absolutely loving it. Even on my small screen, you can read without any discomfort, scrolling through the pages is fast, and I have nothing bad to say about it. There's also a store, of course, but I'm still a bit reserved about buying eBooks. In my experience, they're almost as expensive as their real live counterparts, which is unjustified in my opinion. If I have the choice of buying a new book for 20€ as a hard copy or as an eBook, my choice will always be the real copy. Here comes the big BUT: A lot of classics are available for free from the store! And, as we all know, classics are the best. I've downloaded The Divine Comedy, since I wanted to read it for years now. There's a lot of other great stuff too, like Dracula, Frankenstein, War & Peace, and so on. Also there's a section for independent authors and a lot of the books on there are free too. I'm looking forward to dig around them!

So, I've arrived in the world of eBooks. I'm thrilled to see what's awaiting me there.

New Books

A couple of days ago, my girlfriend told me that our local antiquity/book store had some books by Stephen King for sale. Everything they sell is always so cheap (we suspect that the owner is in fact a very rich guy who only owns that store because he loves old stuff so much), so today I went for a walk there. The weather was perfect and I needed some fresh air after nearly a week of being sick. I bought the four books pictured. Actually I wanted to buy two more but they were so heavy and big that I discarded one I already own (although in an inferior paperback edition) and one that didn't sound so interesting (something about sex games).

The Hemingway book I accidentally stumbled upon. I was asking myself beforehand whether they sold any English books, and as soon as I looked around, that one sprung into my eye. So I just took it with me on a whim, thinking I really need to read more classic authors. All in all, the four books cost me 10€, I don't know exactly which one cost how much but I guess the hardcover books are 3€ each and the Hemingway one 1€.

Reading is sexy!

You shall be my roots

You shall be my roots and
I will be your shade,
though the sun burns my leaves.

You shall quench my thirst and
I will feed you fruit,
though time takes my seed.
And when I'm lost and can tell nothing of this earth
you will give me hope.

And my voice you will always hear.
And my hand you will always have.
For I will shelter you.
And I will comfort you.
And even when we are nothing left,
even in death,
I will remember you.

House of Leaves

Among two other books, I'm currently reading House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski. I've heard good things about it for years now and finally decided to put it on my Christmas wishlist. I'm not that far into it yet but it seems really great. Here's a small excerpt:

But then my nostrils flare with the scent of something bitter & foul, something inhuman, reeking with so much rot & years, telling me in the language of nausea that I'm not alone.
Something's behind me.
Of course, I deny it.
It's impossible to deny.
I wanna puke.

To get a better idea try this: focus on these words, and whatever you do don't let your eyes wander past the perimeter of this page. Now imagine just beyond your peripheral vision, maybe behind you, maybe to the side of you, maybe even in front of you, but right where you can't see it, something is quietly closing in on you, so quiet in fact you can only hear it as silence. Find those pockets without sound. That's where it is. Right at this moment. But don't look. Keep your eyes here. Now take a deep breath. Go ahead take an even deeper one. Only this time as you start to exhale try to imagine how fast it will happen, how hard it's gonna hit you, how many times it will stab your jugular with its teeth or are they nails?, don't worry, that particular detail doesn't matter, because before you have time to even process that you should be moving, you should be running, you should at the very least be flinging your arms--you sure as hell should be getting rid of this book--you won't have time to even scream.
Don't look.
I didn't.
Of course I looked.
I looked so fucking fast I should of ended up wearing one of those neck braces for whiplash.

Christmas

The Mist

Nachts

Habe heute endlich Stephen King's Nachts durchgelesen.

Dort stand:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Mark Twain's Letters from Hawaii

I went to Maui to stay a week and remained five. I had a jolly time. I would not have fooled away any of it writing letters under any consideration whatever.

There are a good many mosquitoes around tonight and they are rather troublesome; but it is a source of unalloyed satisfaction to me to know that the two millions I sat down on a minute ago will never sing again.

(...) and for an hour I took a tranquil delight in that kind of labor which is such a luxury to the enlightened Christian - to wit, the labor of other people.

Brennen muss Salem

Wai

Gestern Abend Desperation durchgelesen :) Wirklich seltsam das Ende o.o

Die Tommyknockers sind überall

'There are all kinds of stories about it. One is that they dug up a waisin, a kind of ancient earth-spirit, and it tore the mine down. Another is that they made the tommyknockers mad.'
'What're tommyknockers?' David asked.
'Troublemakers', Johnny said. 'The underground version of gremlins.'

Stephen King's Desperation

The Zombie Survival Guide

Sinnvolle Tipps:

- Lock all your doors and windows. Although a pane of glass may not stop a zombie, its shattering sound is the best warning you can get.
- Run upstairs and turn on the bathtub. Although this sounds foolish, there is no way of knowing when water the will be cut. After a few days, thirst may become your greatest enemy.
- Take everything you need upstairs (food etc) - including a ladder, this can be used for a later re-stocking
- Demolish the staircase. As zombies are unable to climb, this guarantees your safety.
- Stay out of sight, if you listen to the radio, do so with minimum volume. When the skies darken, do not turn on the lights. Do not go near the windows.
- Turn the telehpone ringer to the lowest volume. If by chance a call comes through, answer it quietly.
- Plan at least two escape routes in case of intrusion or fire
